WHY ICT?

  • I believe a well-rounded and engaging educational experience for students relies on a teacher being able to adapt, not only to different curriculum areas, student needs and learning styles but also to different modes of information delivery.

  • Using ICT when setting a task for students to do in a lesson is a great way to engage millennial students who have grown up from a young age using computers, mobile phones, learning apps and electronic games.

  • Furthermore, children in today’s society not only need to understand literacy in reading and writing on paper but also must be taught literacy type skills for interacting with ICT tools (Honan, 2012, p 61).

  • Using computers is flexible and time saving. Students can transfer, upload and move files using USB flash drives or cloud technology so that their work can easily be edited, submitted, accessed by classmates for collaboration, or viewed by the whole class when doing presentations and readings.

  • Using The Web in lessons gives students the opportunity to develop their research skills. Creating opportunities for students to find information and practice skilled web searching should be included often during lesson time.

  • The popularity of social media in today's society demands that teachers become involved with student’s interests in this area. Loizzo and Ertmer, (2015) suggest teachers utilize online blogs and chat opportunities with their classes so that students can practice discussion on an online platform.

  • iPad’s and tablets are a really effective way to incorporate ICT into a lesson in a normal classroom as opposed to a computer suite and "allow for more portability and kinaesthetic interaction [than] a laptop” (Walter, Baum, 2011, p 7). They also provide easy access to apps and the chance to take videos, photos and audio recordings.
